Missed an IFTA filing deadline? Here is what it costs.

The IFTA late-filing penalty is a penalty the base jurisdiction may assess of $50 or 10 percent of the delinquent tax, whichever is greater (IFTA Articles of Agreement, R1220.100), so even a zero return filed late typically costs $50. Interest accrues separately, per jurisdiction, at 9% annually for 2026. File the return now; the penalty does not grow with delay, but the interest does.

This is a money problem, not an authority problem. Nobody is taking your operating authority over a late IFTA return, but persistent non-filing does put your IFTA license and decals at risk.

The penalty is flat, so the panic can stop

Unlike a missed registration, a late IFTA return does not compound into an escalating penalty. It is a one-time penalty the base jurisdiction may assess of $50 or 10 percent of the delinquent tax, whichever is greater. Interest continues to accrue on unpaid tax, which is the reason to file promptly, but the sky is not falling, and filing late is far better than not filing.

Why the quarter you did not run is the one people miss

IFTA returns are due the last day of the month following the close of each quarter: April 30, July 31, October 31 and January 31. If that day falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the IFTA Articles of Agreement (R960.100) make the next business day the due date.

The single most common late filing is a quarter with no travel. The truck was down, or you ran intrastate only, and nothing felt due. A zero return is still a return, and because the penalty is $50 or 10%, whichever is greater, a zero return filed late still carries the full $50.

The second most common is a misunderstanding about who assesses it. Your base jurisdiction collects on behalf of every member jurisdiction, so the notice comes from your own state even though the tax is owed across several.

What to do, in order

  1. 1

File the return, even though it is late

Filing stops the situation from getting worse and is looked on very differently from not filing. Interest accrues on unpaid tax, so the sooner the return and payment go in, the smaller the interest component.

  2. 2

Assemble the records the return is built from

You need miles traveled per jurisdiction and fuel purchased per jurisdiction. Your ELD mileage export and fuel receipts or fuel-card statement. If those are incomplete, reconstruct as accurately as you can from what exists rather than estimating freely; in an audit the records are what gets examined, not the return.

  3. 3

Expect penalty plus interest, calculated separately

The $50-or-10% penalty is one charge. Interest is another, computed per jurisdiction on that jurisdiction's share of the tax at 9% annually for 2026, accruing at 0.75% monthly. A multi-state return can therefore produce an assessment that is tedious to check by hand.

  4. 4

Contact your base jurisdiction if you cannot pay it all

Your base jurisdiction administers the program and is the only party that can discuss payment arrangements or abatement. Their rules govern, not IFTA's model language and not anything a compliance company tells you.

  5. 5

Fix the cause, which is almost always the calendar

Four dates a year, one of which lands right after the holidays. Put all four on a calendar with a two-week warning, including the quarters you expect to have no travel.

What this costs

Late filing penalty

$50 or 10%

Of the delinquent tax, whichever is greater; the base jurisdiction may assess it even on a zero return (R1220.100).

Interest on unpaid tax (2026)

9%/yr

0.75% monthly, computed per jurisdiction.

Having us file the return: standalone, not on a plan

$119/return

For one truck, plus $25 per additional truck. IFTA is included on the annual membership; month-to-month members pay $49 a return. Included for members. Credited to a plan started within 60 days.

TenFour, with IFTA included on the annual plan

$99/mo

Annual plan for one truck; $119 month to month. Each additional truck $59/month, every driver included, for 1 to 6 trucks; 7 or more is custom pricing. Covers this and every other recurring deadline.

You can file this yourself online

Every base jurisdiction offers online IFTA filing, and if your mileage and fuel records are in order the return is arithmetic. Where a service earns its money is when your records are messy, when you run in many jurisdictions, or when you would simply rather not spend an evening reconciling fuel receipts. The filing itself is not gatekept.

Our IFTA filing service reconciles your ELD mileage export against your fuel data, prepares the return, and flags inconsistencies before they reach a state auditor. And we put the next three deadlines on your calendar so this is a one-time event rather than a habit.

How IFTA filing works

When this is not your situation: We are not tax advisors and cannot represent you before a state revenue department. If you are facing an IFTA audit assessment you disagree with, that is a matter for your base jurisdiction and, if it is large, a tax professional.

Questions people ask at this point

What is the penalty for filing IFTA late?

Under the IFTA Articles of Agreement, R1220.100, it is a penalty the base jurisdiction may assess of $50 or 10 percent of the delinquent tax, whichever is greater. Because of the “whichever is greater” clause, a zero return filed late still typically costs $50. Your base jurisdiction assesses it, so confirm specifics with them.

Do I have to file if I did not drive that quarter?

Yes. A zero return is still required, and this is the most common source of IFTA penalties for small carriers. The truck being parked does not suspend the filing obligation.

How is IFTA interest calculated?

Per jurisdiction, on that jurisdiction’s share of the tax due. The rate is set annually at two percentage points above the IRS underpayment rate, accruing monthly at one twelfth of the annual figure. For 2026 that is 9% annually, or 0.75% per month.

What if the due date falls on a weekend?

The IFTA Articles of Agreement provide that if the last day of the month falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the next business day is the due date.

Can I lose my authority over a late IFTA return?

No: IFTA is administered by your base jurisdiction, not FMCSA, and a late return does not affect your operating authority. Persistent non-filing does put your IFTA license and decals at risk, and operating without valid credentials is its own roadside problem.

What if my mileage records are incomplete?

Reconstruct as accurately as you can from whatever exists: ELD data, trip sheets, fuel receipts, bills of lading. In an IFTA audit the burden of proof sits with the carrier, and an auditor who cannot verify your miles will assess against you. Incomplete but honest records reconstructed contemporaneously are far better than a clean-looking guess.
