USDOT number deactivated? How to reactivate it
If your number really is inactive you are not authorized to operate, and brokers vetting you will see it. But do not panic-buy a service before you have checked your status: the fix is usually free.
FMCSA paused these deactivations on June 1, 2026
While FMCSA stabilizes Motus (the registration system that replaced URS on May 19, 2026), it has temporarily suspended inactivating USDOT numbers for entities that have not completed a required biennial update, and says registrants will get additional time to complete them. No end date has been announced, and FMCSA has not said how already-deactivated carriers are treated. So verify your own status rather than assuming either way.
MCS-150 prepared for you: $199, included for members
The update is free to file and the steps below are all it takes. If you would rather have it prepared, we prepare it for you to submit in your own Motus account and confirm the status in SAFER afterward. Credited in full to a plan you start within 60 days.
Why this happens, almost every time
Under 49 CFR 390.19T every motor carrier must update its registration information every 24 months, even when nothing has changed, and even if you have stopped operating. Miss it and FMCSA's stated consequence is deactivation of the USDOT number, plus civil penalties of up to $1,584 for each day the violation continues, capped at $15,846 (49 CFR part 386, appendix B, adjusted for inflation; the statute's base figures are $1,000 a day and $10,000).
The reason so many carriers miss it is that the deadline is not a date anyone tells you. It is derived from your own USDOT number: the last digit sets the month, the next-to-last digit sets whether you file in odd or even years. No renewal notice arrives in the mail. Two carriers who got authority the same week can have deadlines nine months apart.
A second wave of confusion arrived with Motus in 2026. You sign in with Login.gov, the identity check is run by IDEMIA for FMCSA, and USDOT PINs no longer exist. Motus is first claimed by the company official on your FMCSA Portal account, and FMCSA disables Portal accounts after 90 days of inactivity and archives them after 12 months. Since the filing is biennial, that login is often the thing that has lapsed by the next update.
How to reactivate your DOT number, in order
- 1
Check your real status first
Look yourself up in FMCSA's SAFER Company Snapshot by USDOT number. It shows your operating status directly. Screenshot it. If a broker told you that you were inactive, this is the record they are looking at.
- 2
Find out whether you actually missed the deadline
Your MCS-150 due date comes from your USDOT number, not your registration date. Work it out before you assume you are late, plenty of carriers panic over a deadline that has not arrived.
- 3
File the biennial update through Motus
Registration now runs through Motus. You sign in with your own Login.gov account and complete the IDEMIA identity check yourself. If Motus has not been claimed for your company yet, the company official on your FMCSA Portal account claims it with the same Login.gov email, and a Portal account unused for 90 days is disabled and needs the FMCSA Contact Center. Start that early, because it is the step that takes time, not the form. Every screen is in how to file the MCS-150 in Motus.
- 4
Confirm it took, then keep the proof
Re-check SAFER after processing and save the confirmation. If a broker or insurer flagged you, send them the updated snapshot rather than telling them it is handled.
- 5
Put the next one on a calendar now
The next update is due 24 months out, on the same digit-derived schedule. This is the entire reason the problem recurs, the deadline is knowable years ahead and nothing reminds you.

You do not need to hire anyone for this
Filing the MCS-150 is free and the form is short. Any service charging you a fee is charging for convenience, not for access. There is no expedited channel they can reach that you cannot. If someone contacts you claiming your number is deactivated and demands payment to restore it, that is a well-known solicitation tactic; check SAFER yourself before paying anybody.
Where a service earns its money is not the filing. It is making sure you never see this page again. TenFour tracks your biennial update along with your medical card, annual inspection, MVR review, Clearinghouse query, UCR and IFTA dates, and tells you before each one lands.
Check your MCS-150 due date freeWhen this is not your situation: If your authority was revoked for something other than a missed update (an insurance lapse, an unsatisfactory safety rating, or an enforcement action), that is a different process and this page will not fix it: see reinstatement after a revocation. Say so when you contact us and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right help.

Questions people ask at this point
How do I reactivate a deactivated USDOT number?
In the usual case (deactivation for a missed biennial update), you reactivate by filing the MCS-150 update through FMCSA's Motus registration system. It is free. Check SAFER afterward to confirm the status changed.
Can you reactivate an inactive DOT number?
Yes, if it was deactivated for a missed biennial update: file the MCS-150 update in Motus, then check SAFER to confirm the status changed. A registration revoked for another reason, such as a failed or refused new entrant safety audit, follows a reapplication path instead, with its own waiting period.
How much does it cost to reactivate my DOT number?
No. FMCSA does not charge to update your registration. Services that charge are charging for convenience. If anyone tells you there is a government fee to restore your number, they are misinformed or misleading you.
Is FMCSA still deactivating numbers right now?
As of June 1, 2026 FMCSA temporarily suspended inactivating USDOT numbers for entities that have not completed a required biennial update, while it works through Motus transition issues. No end date has been announced. This is temporary and it does not remove the filing requirement, verify your own status rather than relying on the pause.
How long does reactivation take?
The filing itself takes minutes once you are signed in to Motus. Getting in is the slow part: you sign in with Login.gov and complete the IDEMIA identity check yourself, and if the FMCSA Portal account Motus is claimed from has been disabled (FMCSA disables Portal accounts after 90 days of inactivity and archives them after 12 months), restoring it goes through the FMCSA Contact Center. Start with the account, not the form.
How long does DOT reinstatement take?
It depends on what is being reinstated. A number deactivated for a missed biennial update comes back once the MCS-150 update is processed, usually within days of filing. A revoked operating authority is typically active within about a week of a complete reinstatement request, FMCSA says, once insurance and the BOC-3 are back on file. A revoked new entrant registration cannot be reapplied for until 30 days after the revocation.
Can I keep driving while my number is inactive?
No. An inactive USDOT number means you are not authorized to operate in interstate commerce. Beyond the enforcement risk, brokers check status during carrier vetting, so loads tend to stop before anyone explains why.
How do I know when my next biennial update is due?
The last digit of your USDOT number sets the month and the next-to-last digit sets whether you file in odd or even years, due by the last day of that month. Our free calculator returns your exact date and the one after it.
Someone called saying my DOT number is deactivated and I must pay them. Is that real?
Treat it as a solicitation until proven otherwise. Look yourself up in SAFER directly. Unsolicited calls and mailers about registration status are a persistent problem in this industry, and some are designed to look official. FMCSA does not cold-call demanding payment.
