Missed the UCR deadline? It is fixable today.
Registration remains available and the fee does not increase for filing late. The exposure is a state citation if you are inspected before you register.
There is no escalating federal penalty here
49 U.S.C. 14504a sets no dollar amount and no federal fine for late registration. It preserves the right of participating states to issue citations and impose reasonable fines under their own laws. That means the cost of being late is a possible state citation, not a compounding federal debt, and registering now closes the exposure.
Why so many carriers miss it
UCR has no renewal notice. The registration period for a given year opens the previous October (the 2026 period opened October 1, 2025), and enforcement begins January 1, which makes December 31 the effective deadline. Nothing arrives in the mail to tell you.
It is also routinely confused with the MCS-150 biennial update. They are unrelated: the MCS-150 is free, federal and on a two-year cycle derived from your USDOT number; UCR is an annual fee based on fleet size. Carriers who filed one often believe they have handled the other.
A third source of confusion is that there is no credential to carry. No UCR sticker or certificate is required in the vehicle (enforcement verifies electronically through CVIEW, SAFER or the UCR enforcement portal), so there is no physical reminder that anything is missing.
What to do, in order
- 1
Check whether you are actually unregistered
Verify your status at the official UCR site before assuming. Carriers sometimes discover a broker or a third party filed on their behalf, or that they registered and forgot.
- 2
Register and pay through the official portal only
Use ucr.gov. This program attracts an unusual volume of look-alike sites and unsolicited mailers charging inflated “processing fees” for a filing you can complete yourself in minutes. If a site or letter is charging well above the fee bracket, it is not the government.
- 3
Pay the fee for your correct bracket
Fees are set by vehicle count. For the 2027 registration year (filing opens October 1, 2026) it is $55 for 0 to 2 vehicles, $167 for 3 to 5 and $333 for 6 to 20, up from $46, $138 and $276 in 2026; every bracket is in UCR renewal 2027 fees. Count correctly, under-declaring to land in a cheaper bracket is a straightforwardly bad idea.
- 4
Keep your confirmation
There is no credential to carry, but keep the payment confirmation with your compliance records. If a state questions your status while enforcement data catches up, the confirmation is what resolves it.
- 5
Put next year on the calendar for early October
The registration window opens in October for the following year. Registering in October rather than late December removes this problem permanently.

Do this one yourself, genuinely
UCR registration takes a few minutes at ucr.gov and the fee is the fee. This program is heavily targeted by third parties sending official-looking mail and running look-alike websites that charge large markups for the same filing. There is no expedited channel and no advantage to paying someone. If you take one thing from this page: register directly.
On the membership, UCR is prepared for you every year; you submit it at ucr.gov and pay the government fee there directly, so there is nothing for anyone to mark up. What you are really buying is that the October window never passes unnoticed again, alongside your biennial update, medical certificates, inspections and quarterly IFTA returns.

Questions people ask at this point
What is the penalty for missing the UCR deadline?
There is no federal penalty amount. 49 U.S.C. 14504a preserves the right of participating states to issue citations and impose reasonable fines under their own laws, so the amount depends entirely on the state and whether it has a supporting UCR statute.
Can I still register after January 1?
Yes. The portal remains open and the fee does not increase. Register as soon as you can, the exposure is a citation if you are inspected while unregistered, and that closes the moment you pay.
Can I be put out of service for not having UCR?
We are not going to tell you that, because we could not verify it. CVSA’s enforcement bulletin documents UCR non-payment as a violation recorded on the inspection report. It does not describe it as an out-of-service condition. Plenty of articles claim otherwise; treat that claim carefully and check your state’s rules.
Do I need to carry a UCR credential in the truck?
No. No UCR credential is required in the vehicle. Enforcement verifies electronically through CVIEW, SAFER or the UCR enforcement portal.
Is UCR the same as the MCS-150?
No, and confusing them is common. The MCS-150 biennial update is a free federal filing every 24 months on a schedule derived from your USDOT number. UCR is an annual fee based on fleet size, due before January 1. You need both.
I got a letter demanding UCR payment. Is it legitimate?
Be skeptical. UCR attracts a high volume of unsolicited mail and look-alike websites charging inflated processing fees. Go to ucr.gov directly rather than following a link or phone number from a letter, and compare any quoted amount against the published fee brackets.
