Act today

Insurance cancellation notice? You have 30 days, and two phone calls.

When your insurer files a cancellation of your BMC-91X with FMCSA, the filing cannot take effect for 30 days (49 CFR 387.313(d)), and FMCSA serves an involuntary suspension notice on your operating authority. If a replacement filing is accepted before the effective date, nothing happens. If it is not, the authority goes inactive on that date, SAFER reads NOT AUTHORIZED, and getting it back is a reinstatement with an $80 FMCSA fee plus the days in between. The same clock runs when a BOC-3 process agent cancels.

The 30 days run from the day the cancellation was filed, not the day you found out, and about a quarter of FMCSA's own mailed reminders bounced this summer. Look up your filing status today and count the days yourself.

Nothing has happened to your authority yet

A suspension notice is a warning with a date on it. Under 387.313(e) a replacement certificate filed by your new or current insurer ends the old policy's liability as of the replacement's effective date, and the notice is moot. Most of these are a renewal the agent has not filed yet, a non-payment that a payment fixes, or a switch of insurers where the new company's BMC-91X has not posted. It is a phone call, or two.

Why this happens, and why it lapses anyway

For-hire carriers must keep proof of financial responsibility on file with FMCSA: for most property carriers a BMC-91X from the insurer showing at least $750,000 of liability coverage, plus a BOC-3 designation of process agents. An insurer, surety or process agent that drops you must tell FMCSA first, and the filing cannot be cancelled until 30 days after that notice (49 CFR 387.313(d)). FMCSA's notice to you says the authority will be suspended on the effective date unless an acceptable replacement is on file.

The reasons are ordinary. The policy reached its anniversary and the renewal was bound but the new certificate was never filed. A premium finance company cancelled for a missed installment. The carrier switched insurers and the old company filed its cancellation before the new one filed its certificate. A process agent's annual fee went unpaid. None of these is a compliance failure until the date passes; then it is a revocation, brokers stop tendering the day the status changes, and the way back is a reinstatement request in Motus, an $80 fee, and proof of insurance and a process agent back on file before FMCSA will act on it.

The carriers who lapse are the ones who never saw the notice. FMCSA mails it to the address on the registration, and Commercial Carrier Journal reported in September 2026 that about a million of four million MCS-150 reminder letters came back undeliverable. The public record shows the notice, the effective date and whether a replacement has posted, so anyone can check it, including us, which is how we found you if you arrived here from our letter or email.

What to do, in order

  1. 1

    Find the date

Your Motus record and FMCSA's public licensing and insurance record show the notice with its serve date and effective date, and every insurance filing on file with its own effective date. Count the days from today. If you cannot find it, send us the USDOT number and we will read it for you, free.

  2. 2

    Call your insurance agent

Ask one question: has the replacement BMC-91X been filed with FMCSA, and what effective date does it carry? If the policy renewed or you switched insurers, the new certificate has to be filed by the insurer, electronically, and it has to post before the effective date on the notice. If the cancellation was for non-payment, a payment and a reinstatement of the policy usually lets the insurer withdraw the cancellation; ask for that in writing.

  3. 3

Call your process agent, if the notice names the BOC-3

A BOC-3 cancellation runs the same 30-day clock. Pay the agent, or designate a new blanket agent; the agent files electronically and the designation posts within days. It is the cheapest fix in trucking, $25 to $50 to the agent, and our free guide walks through it.

  4. 4

Watch the record until the replacement posts

A promise from the agent is not a filing. Check the insurance record every couple of days until the new certificate shows with an effective date ahead of the suspension date, and save a copy of that page. If the date is close and nothing has posted, escalate to the insurer's filing desk directly.

  5. 5

If the date already passed, reinstate

Get the insurance and BOC-3 filings back on file first, then request reinstatement of the operating authority in Motus with the $80 fee. FMCSA says authority is typically active within about a week of a complete request. Then put the renewal date and the agent's renewal on a calendar, because this is the lapse that repeats.

What this costs

Fixing it yourself before the date

$0 to FMCSA

Your insurer files the replacement certificate; there is no FMCSA fee while the authority is still active. You pay only your premium and, if it applies, the process agent's $25 to $50.

Reinstating after the date passes

$80

FMCSA's reinstatement fee (49 CFR 360.3T), paid to FMCSA directly in Motus, plus the days without authority while the filings post.

BOC-3 designation, done for you

$99 + agent's fee

An approved blanket agent covering every state, set up in your name, the filing confirmed against your record. You pay the agent's own fee directly. Included for members. Credited to a plan started within 60 days.

Reinstatement, done for you

$995

$595 for members. Only if the date has passed: the filings chased until they post, the reinstatement request prepared for you to submit, the record confirmed. We tell you first, free, whether you need it at all.

$99/mo

Annual plan for one truck; $119 month to month. Each additional truck $59/month, every driver included, for 1 to 6 trucks; 7 or more is custom pricing. Covers this and every other recurring deadline.

Cost of letting the date pass

your loads

NOT AUTHORIZED on SAFER the day the authority goes inactive; brokers and load boards read it.

Most of the time you do not need us for this

Two phone calls and a check of the record fix nearly every notice, and we do not sell insurance, so there is nothing to buy here. Where a carrier gets into trouble is finding out late, and then finding out again next year. If you have the date and the agent's number, make the call today.

We read the record for you, free: the exact effective date, whether a replacement filing has posted, and what the notice actually names. Enter your USDOT number and it comes back the same day with your whole compliance picture, including the next dates that could do this to you. We do not sell insurance and take nothing from any agent; if you join, what we sell is the calendar. If the date has already passed and the authority went inactive, see reinstatement after a revocation.

When this is not your situation: We do not sell or place insurance and cannot file a certificate for an insurer. If your insurer has cancelled you for a reason you dispute, or you cannot find coverage at all, that conversation is with an insurance agent or broker, not a compliance company. We are a private company, not FMCSA or any government agency.

Questions people ask at this point

What is an operating authority involuntary suspension notice?

FMCSA's notice that a required filing (an insurance certificate or a BOC-3 process agent designation) has been cancelled and that the operating authority will be suspended on the effective date unless a replacement is on file first. The cancellation cannot take effect until 30 days after the insurer or agent notified FMCSA.

How long do I have?

30 days from the date the cancellation was filed with FMCSA, under 49 CFR 387.313(d). The effective date is printed on the notice and shown in the public record. It is not extended because the mail was late.

Do I have to do anything if my policy simply renewed?

Confirm the new certificate was filed. A renewal with the same insurer is often filed automatically, but a switch of insurers or a change of policy number needs a new BMC-91X from the new company, and the old company's cancellation may already be on the record. The public record settles it in a minute.

What happens if the date passes?

The operating authority becomes inactive, SAFER shows NOT AUTHORIZED, and for-hire interstate operation stops being legal. Reinstatement requires the insurance and BOC-3 filings back on file, a reinstatement request in Motus and an $80 fee, after which FMCSA says authority is typically active within about a week.

Can TenFour file the insurance for me?

No. Only the insurer can file the certificate, and we do not sell insurance. We read the record, tell you what is missing and by when, chase the filing with you until it posts, and handle the BOC-3 designation and the reinstatement filing if it comes to that.

Why did I not get the letter?

FMCSA serves the notice at the address on your registration, and a wrong address means no letter. Keep the registration current in Motus, and check the record whenever a policy renews or changes.
